Learn to sing a new song, read a new rhythm with sheet music! Embark on a journey into the land of reading music and sight-singing! This class will outline the fundamentals of music by identifying and teaching note values, pitches, the difference between melody and harmony and how to read music symbols. Learn how to identify Italian music terms and to accurately read and write rhythm patterns. Through this class become a better sight-reader and more comfortable in all types of musical genres.
+Drama 3 for Kids/Teens: One Act Charlie Brown (ages 10 - 14) Teacher: Rachel Waterman
Pre-requisite: 2 drama or musical theater classes & audition
Expand your characterization and delve deeper into the world of acting. Discover how to create a dynamic character and bring the story alive. Using improv, drama games, and open scenes, students will learn how to find a character arc, incorporate environment, make strong creative choices and use sensory recall in creative believable scenes. All will present a one act production at the end of the session using their new skills.
Drama 9 for Teens: Shakespeare (ages 12 - 18) Teacher: Kevin King
Pre-requisite: 1 drama class
To be, or not to be—that is the question. Come learn what it takes to be a Shakespearean actor. This class will tackle Shakespeare’s language and equip every actor to approach Shakespeare’s scripts with the proper knowledge and techniques. After laying the foundation through an intense, detailed script scoring process, we will approach Shakespeare’s language with specific acting techniques that will bring out the best in the text—and in you. Put your newfound skills to the test as we workshop monologues as well as scenes. After this class, you will never fear the great Bard again!

Explore two of the most popular forms of dance: Hip Hop and Modern. You will be stretched and challenged in this class as we continue to expand our knowledge and ability. Your creativity through dance will help us focus on technique, strength, control, flexibility, musicality, and style of Modern dance followed by funky fresh steps from the latest Hip Hop fads. We will spend a lot of time both on the ground and in the air…so get ready to let go! Gym shoes are required.
Musical Theater 2 for Teens: Broadway Bound (ages 12 - 18) Teacher: Kristi Wright
Pre-requisite: 2 Classes in Dance, Drama, Voice or Musical Theater

Take your acting skills to the next level in this challenging drama class. Build on previous experience and create authentic emotion, genuine relationships, engage in environment and build dramatic tension in scenes. Learn how to get into a character’s head and make it your own or build a character from scratch. Engage in a variety of dramatic styles from skits, plays & more. This class is a great opportunity to stop pretending and start acting!
*Comedy 1 for Teens (ages 12 - 18) Teacher: Vanda Varnai-Garcia
It's all in the timing: come fine tune your comedy skills in this energetic, invigorating class. We will strongly emphasize the give and take between scene partners on stage in this class. We will learn new partner and group exercises that will keep you sharp and quick on your feet, as well as strengthen your on-stage relationships. We will experiment with bits and gags within the context of two and three-person scenes and learn how to make them…well, funny. And we will focus on pace, tempo, and timing in order to nail those moments just right. It's time to get serious about comedy!

Improv 5 for Teens: Improvapalooza (ages 12 - 18) Teacher: Ben Olson
Requirement to be on Improvapalooza Team; Pre-req: Improv 4: Improvapalooza Prep and Selection
This class will prepare students to compete on their area's Improvapalooza team in downtown Chicago. This class rehearses once a week during the Spring session, with continued rehearsals through the beginning of summer until departing for the Improvapalooza competition. Continue to create characters and environments, group think, accepting offers and playing off your teammates, and perfect/plan for the official games for Improvapalooza. Learn how to capture your audience when you sing a breathtaking ballad and how to keep your energy high while dancing in a big toe-tapping number. Everyone will get a chance to shine in high-energy small group numbers as well as show-stoppin’ ensemble numbers in our dynamic end-of-session showcase!
Voice 4 for Teens: Choral (ages 12 - 18) Teacher: Kristi Wright
Pre-requisite: 1 voice class
Choral music has existed for centuries and is one of the best ways to enhance your ear training and knowledge of music. In this class learn to sing more advanced choral pieces ranging from Baroque choral pieces to Broadway show-stoppers to American Spirituals.
Dance 10 for Teens: Project Dance (ages 12 - 18) Teacher: Mychall Cornejo
Pre-requisite: Enrolled in Winter 2013 Project Dance
For seasoned students, Project Dance is a 3 session progressive dance journey. Students will receive intense training in technique and raise the bar on their dance performance. The goal of PD is to elevate the quality of dance training in Spotlight by creating a community of dedicated students and teachers who want to use their talents to glorify God through the art form of various dance styles. Students are encouraged to attend a summer Project Dance Camp offering workshops and a dance concert.
