How many students are usually cast? Does every student who auditions get cast?
At Spotlight we try to include as many students as possible. Most of our shows cast between 90-110 students. Depending on the number of students that audition, all students might be cast. However, usually we have to cut some students from the production.
-
What about new students? Do they for sure get cast?
New students are not guaranteed a role but have an equal chance of getting cast as veteran auditioners based on their audition.
-
What are callbacks?
Callbacks are how the directors see student read/sing/dance for a specific role. They usually follow audition day. You will be notified if you received a callback on your MYAccount page. Nothing needs to be memorized or prepared; students will be taught material at callbacks. However if a show is available to the public, we encourage students to become familiar with the songs and material as it will help them to have a more successful callback.
-
Can I audition for a specific role?
No, you are not able to audition for a specific role. However if you would like to demonstrate to the directors your ability for a certain character, we recommend choosing a song in a similar style or genre that shows those attributes.
-
If I am not called back, does that mean I didn’t make the show?
Callbacks are a much smaller number than those cast. So just because you didn’t get a callback doesn’t mean you are not cast.
-
Are all roles open?
Yes, all roles are open in the auditions. However, we do cast by age appropriateness (for example, most likely an 8 year old will not be cast as Belle).
-
How do we check callbacks/casting?
You can check to see if you received a callback by logging into MYAccount. Cast lists will be posted on the callboard and also under latest news.
-
If I am not cast, what is the refund policy on classes?
Auditions is a privilege for enrolled students. Auditioning is considered part of the class experience. There are no refunds if your child auditions.
-
How should I help my child understand casting?
Casting is a very difficult process for directors. There are a many elements to consider including talent, age, physicality, vocal range, acting ability, the variety of roles to fill, as well as many intangible “it” factors. Sometimes casting a role comes down to something that the child cannot control at all. If your child is disappointed because they were not cast, we encourage them to keep trying and improving their skills. Many children become better auditioners through experience and age. We also invite them to be a part of the show by participating backstage, ushering or taking other opportunities. If your child is disappointed in their role, we urge you to help them understand that EVERY role is important and to make the most of the opportunity to be a part of a production. Ultimately, your reactions and feelings regarding casting will influence your child greatly. Feelings of disappointment are natural part of the process but most cast members find being a part of the show in any capacity is exciting and rewarding.
-
How do I get feedback on my child’s audition?
You can request feedback on your child’s audition through the area coordinator. The directors may choose to give you feedback or not. Please do not contact the directors directly. If your child is cut, they will receive a letter from the director with feedback on their audition.
-
What happens if I have a conflict come up after casting?
Let your area coordinator know ASAP. The absence will not be excused except for extreme circumstances. You may be asked to drop the production or be eliminated from a scene because of unexcused absences.
-
Can I audition again in another county?
Students may only audition ONCE per session and cannot audition in another county after they’ve auditioned (even if auditioned for experienced only or dropped). Occasionally, students who are cut from one production are invited to be a part of the chorus in a different production at the discretion of the show director and artistic director.
